His log also shows
started index creator: "/usr/bin/gtar -tf - 2>/dev/null |    sed -e 's/
^\.//'"
index tee cannot write [Broken pipe]

Might this be the reason ?

what happens if you try to run this manually 
(e.g. sh /usr/bin/gtar cf /home | /usr/bin/gtar -tf - 2>/dev/null |    sed
-e 's/ ^\.//'" )

[John, is this the right way to test ?]
