In reference to this thread, in which it has been determined that writing to/from my tape drive is producing some loss of integrity, (mis-translation of random bytes, occurs both with tar, and dump, and using amanda) does anyone here know how to troubleshoot a SCSI tape drive or whether it is in fact necessary to troubleshoot it in this case, or whether I just chalk it up to a bad drive and get a new one.
The drive is a HP SureStore DAT24.
