We had a problem which I suspect conforms to this description. With
firmware 2.39, all our regular amanda backups failed silently, but
amflushes were good. Flushes do not wait for the clients and therefore
presumably don't time out.

This started happening when we replaced a dead ADR50 with a new one.
When I read about the problems others were having with 2.39, I began
to suspect that I'd involuntarily undergone a firmware upgrade.

We called Onstream, and after much nagging and gnashing of teeth
obtained firmware 2.33. I installed this last night and this morning's
regular backup verified correctly.

I can't recommend Onstreams (I guess I'd get a Sony AIT2 instead if I
were buying today) but if you're stuck with one this might help.
