If your network is using WRED or any other drop-packets-deliberately queueing strategy, Amanda's UDP-based protocols will be hit particularly hard. UDP doesn't automatically retransmit, so Amanda has to do it, and Amanda's algorithms aren't quite up to TCP's (now 33 year-old!) capabilities.
