Without a holding disk, amanda can only dump a single DLE at a time.
So you lose the advantage of multiplexing dumps.

The data format of dumps on the holding disk is different than
the "taped" format.  So amanda can't just "move" the data from
holding to "tape".

I try to keep the holding disk on a different spindle than the
virtual tapes.
