For an easy starter question:  does your server  (coyote, I take it?)
include the PI node’s name in the  .amandahosts   file?    (And  
.k5amandahosts,  but I doubt if you use kerberos).

Sample client line:
.amandahosts:PI.my.domain    root amindexd amidxtaped
