Perhaps I was being paranoid. This mornings emailed report is not 
statistically different enough in output size to indicate that 1.29 was 
saving stuff that 1.27.1 wasn't. So I'm assuming the backups are usable, 
and I just removed the amanda.conf changes in case the data did grow.
