I have a similiar setup (and know several people who have the 
same), and never experienced the problem.

There is one possible reason, however, which may depend on the 
kind of IRC server you're trying to connect to. Some may insist on 
a working identd reply and may even reject a connection if they 
receive one which doesn't match your username.

To try, you can

 a) make AmIRC use "root" as the username (because this is, by 
default, what pidentd replies in a RH 5.2 setup for unknown 
connections)

 b) try connecting to an IRC server which doesn't bother about the 
username (try irc.vapor.com)

 c) try installing the midentd package -- it's a special ident which 
can correctly give out information about masqueraded connections 
(this is what I'm using, btw)
