BJ and I are having the devil of a time with line noise.

Thanks

John,

I'd like to know how your progress goes on the issue. I had a similar
problem at my former QTH, and HF communication was all but shut down. 80M
was the best band with a line noise of about S9+20, and 10M was full scale.
I got lucky and tracked the problem to a single offending pole:

The folks that do this kind of noise hunt for a living seem to recommend
a directional VHF AM receiver such as a DJ-580 handy talkie with a 3 element
yagi, and tuned to AM aircraft frequencies (say 110 MhZ). I used the easier
method of my AM car radio tuned between stations at both ends of the dial
(say 560 Khz and 1650 Khz). While driving down a road following the power
lines, the noise will go up and down over the wavelength received. If the
nose peaks at the same spot at multiple frequencies, then your very close to
the problem. What surprised me is what happened when I got very close. The
noise completely blocked my receiver, and a very distinct and loud 60 hz
groan modulation was heard. That groan was only heard close to the problem
(within 100 feet) pole whereas the normal line noise was loud at least 100
yards in any direction.

At my new QTH I had severe line noise, and still on occasion do. The worst
noise was one from my garage door opener, and the VCR my wife uses. Both put
out nasty broadband emissions on 80M. Last year a power transformer down the
street blew up. Since then things are quieter. Get a battery receiver, and
turn off all the power to the shack. You might be surprised to find that the
noise source is in your shack/home!

Regards,
Jim
