I haven't looked at svn docs, but I'm sure you can branch from anywhere, not
just the current status. So when someone creates the branch, they should do
it before that change (work out where the best place to branch is, and
decide which if any of the changes since then need to be merged across).

we decided to create a branch for the 0.96 development before we make
those big changes of cleaning the code, right ? and for a good reason,
like the fact that the make install was broken without being noticed...
