You are also getting a lot more Unix users who aren't computer gurus. These are
usually former Windows users who are using Unix (a) to run Internet services or
(b) because Linux is hot. They are used to a hand-holding-wizard style install
and 'make install' is the closest thing that is cross-platform Unix. And this is
probably the way things are going to change, just like happened in the hardware
industry five to seven years ago.

And frankly, I see no reason why Unix programs should be necessarily so
confusing. I don't like install Wizards (they're a waste of time for anyone who
knows what they're doing) but more guided installations would certainly make Unix
programs easier to install and use.
