Droid commercials certainly promise access to more apps than you can
fit on your phone, but I've seen no marketing that suggests that the
apps are free. I suppose people might be sold on the idea of free
apps if the are told that at the retail store.

It might be worth noting that I regularly get purchases from buyers
named "RETAIL STORE xxxx" and the like, which tells me that retail
stores are using apps to showcase the devices they are selling, and it
might be the case that the user isn't told which apps come pre-loaded
or free or whatever.

I also suspect there was an expectation of "free apps for life"
cultivated when the market first launched without any paid apps at
all. I remember when the first supported paid apps, the market was
littered with ratings the said "I'll never spend money on an app!"

I don't know about this because I'm sure retail stores make a killing
on phone accessories. Someone might walk in to buy a $200 phone and a
$70/month plan, then leave with an all that plus an upgraded sdcard,
screen protectors, a car charger, and a belt holster, all at prices
well above what they be bought online. The user certainly may see
apps as more accessories to their phones (or not, I don't know!).

Anyway, back to the original observation of this thread: my app has
lost another 2% active install base since the original post 7 days
ago. I really hope this trend levels off some time soon, or an
explanation makes itself evident. It's just kinda freaking me out not
knowing what's behind it.
