OK, and the final answer is ... You are right!
It is an installed app. Turns out after some more research, Verizon has started including an app as part of the system image that has similar keywords to ours. The user tries to uninstall it and can't. So the user goes to the Market App, finds our app due to the similar keywords and mistakes it for the pre-installed one - so the user then sends us an email about the problem.
