Thanks for the battery tip. I just got an S and had the 'where's the USB gone' problem straight out of the box (and after the charge naturally...) Nothing registered by the linux kernel at all, though the phone showed power. Fixed by battery pull-out, hope it's not going to happen much it's a bit tricky getting the cover off the S I think.
