I encountered a similar problem and found with some testing that adding: getWindow().setSoftInputMode(WindowManager.LayoutParams.SOFT_INPUT_STATE_ALWAYS_HIDDEN); as the last line of the onCreate() for each class that extends Activity did the trick.
