It is simple enough. The hardest part is getting the reader to be recognized (if it is USB).
For some, these solutions (Intuit, Square and VeriFone) are a no go because of high rates and/or they don't tie into existing infrastructures. There is nothing overly complex or challenging about a project like this other than the hardware being connected to the device.
