You don't select any carrier once you've done "Select Automatically", just press the home key.
Selecting a single carrier after "Select Automatically" would probably stop roaming between carriers working because you've told the 'phone you only want to connect to a single carrier. I know the "Select Automatically" has not feedback telling you that it's now on roam mode, maybe that's something that needs improving.
