It needs better hardware and a few more twicks.

I don't care if the user experience I get is T-Mobile's fault, ot HTC's fault, or Google's fault - I don't go to the store and say "Hey, give me that Google phone" or "that HTC phone", or that "T-Mobile" phone. It's the T-Mobile G1 phone with hardware from HTC and OS by Google, so it's everybody's G1. So anyway, I got my G1 on 3rd week of December, last year. The second I saw it (I opened the package at UPS's office) it felt cheap (compared to iPhone) but I thought let's use it for a while and held that thought. I did for a couple of days as I learned what it can do and can't do... To summarize: there's hardly a day I don't have all sorts of problems with the device, especially after the 1.1 OTA update but I'm not going to speculate it's the OTA's fault. The G1 sucks. No, it doesn't suck, it sucks balls. This is by far, the WORST mobile gadget I've EVER got. My 1st GSM was STEADIER than the G1, and I've never seen ONE SINGLE device as bad as the G1 as a mobile phone, and I've had all sorts of them -- Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens, Fujitsu-Siemens, Samsung, and more. 1. It lags - all apps off, no 3rd party services running, no nothing - I press the Menu button, it "thinks" for a few seconds, during which time the Home screen only has its background - no app icons, and you can't scroll left/right - it simply won't react. If I insist on doing something I get the dreaded "Wait or Force Close" dialog saying that process com.android.acore (or whatever its name is) doesn't respond. A few secs later I can use it. Let's say it an Android thing. I've seen this with several other apps, i.e. it's not the home activity only. I've seen it with the dialer as well -- I try to make a call, and get the dialog, hit wait, and then I can make the call. I'm sure other STOCK apps have hung, just can't remember which. I've also seen it with the game I developed. Very, very, very rarely, it would simply block after a touch, and if I continue tapping the screen I'll get the dialog, otherwise I'll get the ANR logged but not displayed. 2. The button to dial/answer a call, and to end a call won't react for like 5 seconds. I have to continuously press them in order to answer or hang up a call. It's been like that after the 1.1 OTA - and I mean that as soon as the phone rebooted after the update, I started getting this behavior. It's been like that months now. You can imagine how many calls I've managed to miss, and how everytime I have to hang up I feel, as I have to press the hang up button 15 times. 3. As of today, I'm hearing the dialing/ringing sound AFTER the call has began. That is, I call someone, he answers, we start talking, and I'm still hearing the ringing sound. I can also hear the ringing sound AFTER someone else calls me and we're talking. 4. My calls end abruptly - that is, I'm talking to someone, and at random time the phone would just break the call - it's not like I'm accidentally pressing the hang up button because I don't see call end up (the phone activity's screen in red). How here's a funny thing from today. I'm talking to a friend, and we're about to discuss how G1 sucks, and how wonderful iPhone is :) The *SECOND* my friend mentioned iPhone the call breaks. So I call him again, and we resume the call with me starting to rant how BAD the G1 is and how I've never seen such bullshits on an iPhone (BREAK), and I call him again, and he says just ONE WORD and it's "iPhone" and the call BREAKs, he's swearing on his family he didn't hang up to make a joke and I believe him. Now, I don't believe in conspiracy theories, and I'm sure the phone won't listen and intercept the word "iPhone" to break a call, just sharing the experience. 5. This is an Android thing - the call log's "Clear log" menu item won't ask me whether I want to delete it. It's extremely frustrating because I put my G1 in a pocket, or in my wallet (I don't know the English word for a very little man's bag, resembling a wallet), and accidentally press the Menu button, it opens the menu and guess what - "Clear log" is there, waiting to be tapped. There are a LOT of other smaller things that annoy me, but these are absolute killers. As of today, I'm going to use my G1 *only* for development. I remember how much I wanted it, how I craved for it, how I coveted it... now, I don't wanna see it, it annoys the hell out of me. However, think about *this* -- perhaps I'm not the only one? What if there are MANY users experiencing these issues? You know how much devices T-Mobile sold last year, do you know how many were RETURNED or will be? I'm going to keep an eye on Android and maybe I'll resume development for Android devices some day but the way I see it it won't be soon. Now, I don't wanna say anything about Android - it's the OS's 1st release, and God knows Android engineers have done a great job. However, the user experience still sucks. It might be because it's based on Linux, or perhaps because it uses the God damn Dalvik VM, or I don't know what... I like what Google does -- I use Google (the search engine), Gmail, Picassa, GTalk, Chrome... but it seems I'll stop using my Android device for a while.
