First and foremost, IANAL. Here's the deal, the doom source code was dual licensed. It was originally released under the DSL (Doom Software License) and later under the GPL. They couldn't revoke the DSL so the source is dual licensed. Now, if the developer chose the DSL, they don't have to follow the "copyleft" provisions found in the GPL, but any form of commercial exploitation is forbidden with the DSL.
It is my understanding that with the GPL, one can charge for their software but they must provide their changes to the GPL source, to those that received a copy of the program. In other words, if you paid for that copy of Doom, then you should be entitled to the modified source code. Also, under the GNU license, anyone who purchased that program can now freely distribute it if they so choose. It is for this reason that there is not much success with commercial software released under such a licensing scheme. One question, has anyone actually purchased this app to see what sort of license it is under? I'm curious if the developer has provided any information which may indicate what license he is using (if he even is abiding by either the GPL or DSL). ~clark On Apr 15, 10:12 am, Incognito <[email protected]> wrote: > It is shareware.
