Yeah, so your understanding of active install is guesswork, like everybody's else. Oh as we are just guessing away, I have a guess to add on my own ;-)
Downloads doesn't mean downloads (which would include downloads of every new release), but the number of devices this app has ever seen over it's lifetime (all releases). But it doesn't really matter. Those observations lead to nothing as the numbers just don't add up. In my case the app is out since the beginning of January and I have 36% active installs? That would mean that only two thirds of the people trying out my app have uninstalled it. That's highly unlikely.
