I've found if you have multiple different IM clients running on multiple different machines it's very unpredictable what happens. The different IM services handle it differently, and I think the different clients do too. What seems most constant is if you sign into an IM account, or activiely use it, then you will receive on that machine as well.
Latitude probably would be similar, alternating reported position as Hong suggested.
