Well one point I will give the carriers is not being too fond of
customers who brick their devices and then come running for support.

No need to. Stock Android devices like the Nexus One have been
available for purchase outside of carrier control for quite the time.
When a consumer wants or needs the flexibility and is looking to stay
current - get one of these models. There *are* choices.
