I ended up getting the build to work. I deleted the entire kernel dir and pulled it down again before I read your post. I then executed:
make ARCH=arm herring_defconfig make -j4 ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-eabi- It built! I suppose what you pointed out was probably the problem. I hope this helps anybody in the future.
