There is a good walkthrough on how to build the kernel for the
motorola droid on this forum here:

I suggest reading the posts by the OP, and the ones I added on page 4
and 5.  I just went through this process a few days ago, and it worked
for me.  I don't have wifi working yet, but I anticipate getting it to
work today.
