I'm afraid that you just can't write to flash devices like that --- they
need special support for erasing flash sectors before reprogramming and
dealing with flash metadata. There are about a zillion different ways of
doing that depending on what exactly you want to do with it. Check out
the mtd-utils package on Ubuntu for about two dozen different programs
for managing flash devices.

What precisely are you trying to do?
