It appears to me that the Launcher you are using has some layout-related customization. The space between two rows seems excessive. The font size seems a little large. For comparison, here is the default app Launcher (Launcher2) from AOSP on 800x480 display (density=160): http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/File:Android-jb-4.2.2-apps-am335xevm.png This goes into app development area where I have no experience.
