Not to put too fine a point on it: Basically, entity EJBs are broken :-/

The design might have looked good way back when it was first invented, but 
personally I think hibernate or JDO (or even JavaSpaces, for that matter) are 
way better at persisting objects than entity EJBs. Hibernate even has a real 
query language to find persisted objects.

But within the constraints of the framework, the EJB cartridge does its best 
to provide as much OO features as it can...
