this is nothign to do with encoding, it's mplayer missing something.
you might need some specific module for pxa video? try "find
/lib/modules -name "*pxa*" and see if anything looks like a video
driver, check see if loaded with "lsmod" and if not, "insmod" or
modprobe it.

try telling mplayer to use x11 video driver to prove it will do
anything at all.

I recall people said there was a problem with the driver on the C1000,
but others found it was OK and loaded it anyway.

possibly.

I'd optimise the encoding of video once you've seen how well it plays back.
