I had the same problem,

--> On 2007.12-r2 and 2007.12-r3, use vi to edit /etc/altboot.func, at
the begining of function mount_sd, add (type A to start editing, type
"Cancel" key twice to exit editing, shift-zz (not Fn) to save changes,
:q! to exit without saving) :

/sbin/modprobe locomo_spi
/sbin/modprobe mmc_block (necessary?)
/sbin/modprobe mmc_spi
sleep 5
Mine boots fine from SD now
