OK, I'm slowly solving my own problems.
Regarding the missing utilities from the sanity checker - I did not understand 
that these are utilities that were needed on the HOST - not part of bitbake at 
all!

Now that I'm past the sanity checker, it looks like bitbake s chugging along 
happily making  a vase-image.
