1. RICHMOND FORUM: Times-Dispatch Asks If Government is too Big or Too Small
================================================

The Richmond Times Dispatch is hosting a discussion about whether the
government is too big or too small. See:

http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/is_government_doing_too_much_or_not_enough/269090/

Incidentally, there is a poll on the question as well. You know what to do.

And if you live in the Richmond area, please try to attend this Forum of
theirs, and get up to speak. Prepare a brief statement to make beforehand, and
be prepared to hand a copy to the reporter covering the session. They do
report the citizen comments in the paper -- so you might even see your name in
lights the next day! Handing them a copy of your statement ensures that the
quotation of you will be accurate.

2. VIDEO FOR MEMORIAL DAY: "Why We Fight"
================================================

Why not recognize Memorial Day with a pledge to yourself to do something to
help eliminate violent conflict?

And while you're mulling over the idea, rent the video "Why We Fight", and
watch it for Memorial Day?

Our own Virginia Libertarian author Karen Kwiatkowski of the Shenandoah Valley
is interviewed in this documentary about the rise and maintenance of the United
States military-industrial complex and its fifty-year involvement with the wars
led by the United States to date, especially its 2003 Invasion of Iraq.

The documentary asserts that in every decade since World War II, the American
public was told a lie, so that the Government (incumbent Administration) could
take them to war and fuel the military-industrial economy maintaining American
political dominance in the world. Interviewees (besides Kwiatkowski) include
politician John McCain, political scientist and former-CIA analyst Chalmers
Johnson, politician Richard Perle, reporter William Kristol, writer Gore Vidal,
and public policy expert Joseph Cirincione.

'Why We Fight' documents the consequences of said foreign policy with the
stories of a Vietnam War veteran whose son was killed in the September 11, 2001
attacks, and who then asked the military to write the name of his dead son on
any bomb to be dropped in Iraq; and that of a twenty-three-year-old New Yorker
who enlists in the United States Army because he is poor and in debt, his
decision impelled by his mother's death; and a military explosives scientist
who arrived to the U.S. as a refugee girl from Vietnam in 1975.

3. AMAZING: G-Men Admit Fault Lay With One of Their Own
================================================

"Richmond police have reversed course and cleared a woman they originally
charged in a predawn wreck last week (specifically, Friday, May 15, 2009) on
Hull Street Road that left an officer injured.

"Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood said yesterday that his department was
continuing its investigation of the crash and had withdrawn a charge of failure
to yield the right of way that had been filed against Latoya D. Carter, 27, of
Richmond.

"Shortly after citing Carter after Friday's 4:24 a.m. collision, police found
information on the computer of officer Mark Levy's Ford Crown Victoria that
indicated he was traveling 98 mph at the time in his marked cruiser while
responding to a Code 2 -- or non-emergency -- call, sources said."

4. False-flag Operation Nation: The "Temple Plot"
================================================

It's truly very hard to keep the population whipped into a froth of fear and
panic. The first attempt, of course, is usually easy. But after a while the
terror subsides, and people get inured to the hype, the trgger words begin to
fail -- so one must continually ramp it up and create "more terrorists". The
swine flu thing was a wash for the G-men. On to the next target; government
will keep on trying to create a scenario that gives it an opportunity to keep
people afraid and grab more powers to "protect" them.

It seems F-Troop has finally won [bogus] convictions in that Miami 'Plot' thing
you might have heard about:

http://www.antiwar.com/blog/2009/05/12/us-finally-wins-bogus-conviction-in-miami-plot/

"This whole operation was a foolish waste of time and money," according to
Terence Kindlon, a defense lawyer representing the last terror suspect to be
tried in the state of New York. "It is almost as if the FBI cooked up the plot
and found four idiots to install as defendants.... They were all
unsophisticated dimwits."

Don't you feel better now that you know the FBI protected you by assigning more
than 100 agents to a year-long investigation of three petty criminals and a
mentally ill Haitian immigrant - none of whom had any connection with any known
terrorist group? The entire "plot" was hatched by an FBI informant. A law
enforcement type committed a Freudian slip when he said: "It was fully
controlled at all times."

Indeed.

5.  Auction Off Virginia's Ports!
================================================

Awhile back, I suggested auctioning off Virginia's ports:

6. DID YOU KNOW: FCC Can Search YOU Without Warrant
================================================

"You may not know it, but if you have a wireless router, a cordless phone,
remote car-door opener, baby monitor or cellphone in your house, the FCC claims
the right to enter your home without a warrant at any time of the day or night
in order to inspect it.

"Anything using RF energy — we have the right to inspect it to make sure it is
not causing interference," says FCC spokesman David Fiske. That includes
devices like Wi-Fi routers that use unlicensed spectrum, Fiske says... The FCC
claims it derives its warrantless search power from the Communications Act of
1934, though the constitutionality of the claim has gone untested in the
courts."

7. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Expression and Communication" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you an exploration of the Libertarian Party's platform
position # 1.1 - Expression and Communication, which reads:

--------
We support full freedom of expression and oppose government censorship,
regulation or control of communications media and technology. We favor the
freedom to engage in or abstain from any religious activities that do not
violate the rights of others. We oppose government actions which either aid or
attack any religion.
--------

In other words, we support every individual's right to free expression -- in
speech, thought, religion, etc. We want government to get completely out of
the regulation of expression.

9. The "Government Behaving Badly" Files
================================================

Anyone who has ever watched "Cops" will have witnessed car-chase scenes where a
suspect almost hurts a police officer, with a predictable police response of
immediate deadly force. The first few times a casual viewer sees one of these
sequences, he would probably think the force was justified. However, after
dozens upon dozens of these events, it becomes clear that the escalation to
deadly force is part of a predetermined pattern.

I call it the "step in, justify, shoot" sequence. Watch them carefully. Any
time a suspect is attempting to elude police, the police try to maneuver one or
more of the officers present into a path in front of a suspect's already-moving
vehicle, which gives them the presumption of self-defense, whereupon the
suspect is shot in a hail of gunfire.

At the beginning of this video, you will see an example of this very behavior.
Normal people do not knowingly attempt to step in front of a moving vehicle;
however, you will see a policeman doing just that. He does so already aware of
the fact that the vehicle contains a suspect who is running, and although the
policeman can see the van, the van driver probably cannot see the policeman
because of the dark car in between him and the officer. The van's rear tires
lose traction for a moment as he tries to clear the car and as he accelerates,
the momentary traction loss propels him towards the officer in the road as he
accelerates.

Fortunately the suspect isn't given a lethal hail of "justified" gunfire as a
result, but he does get a hammering until the government guys realize there is
a camera on them:
