2. Exploit the Government: Take Advantage of the Sales Tax Holiday
================================================

For a brief time, you have an opportunity to live in a world with fewer taxes.
Take advantage of it. This month, your opportunity comes in the form of the
"Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Equipment" tax holiday, which runs from
May 25-31, 2008.

Between May 25 and 31, avoid paying sales tax on a whole bunch of things the
Virginia government has decided qualify as "Hurricane Preparedness Equipment".
It's a great time to stock up on batteries, fire extinguishers, and other neat
stuff -- and leave the Governor and his bureaucratic minions out of the loop.

Don't forget that a prime element of emergency preparedness is firearms and
plenty of ammunition (although they have been left off the list, conveniently
enough).

During this seven-day period, purchases of items designated by the Department
of Taxation as hurricane preparedness equipment, including portable generators,
will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Portable generators must be priced
at $1,000 or less, and other eligible items must be priced at $60 or less for
each item. See:

http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=IndWhatsNew#SalesTaxHoliday

See the full list of exempted items here:

http://www.tax.virginia.gov/Documents/2009%20Hurricane%20Preparedness%20List%20of%20Exempt%20Items.pdf

As most of our readers are aware, Libertarians work towards the outright repeal
of most or all taxes; and allowing government activities to be funded by user
fees. One tax that we could all do without is the state sales tax. Here's a
brief history:

• 1966: 2 percent sales tax enacted. Half of the money goes to the state
general fund, and half goes to school systems based on school-age population.

• 1966: Local governments authorized by state to impose an additional 1 cent
per dollar sales tax, which would be collected by the state and immediately
returned to local treasuries. All jurisdictions do so.

• 1968: State's portion of the original sales tax increases by 1 cent, doubling
the amount of sales tax revenue that goes to the state's general fund.

• 1986: Sales tax is increased by a half-cent per dollar, with proceeds going
to the newly created Transportation Trust Fund.

Naturally, the Libertarian Party does not advocate discriminatory taxes that
favor one kind of merchandise or retailer over any other. However, the facts
on the ground are what they are, so until the taxes are sent to the trash heap,
we also support the right of every individual to do everything possible to keep
the government from sticking its nose in for a percentage.

Don't forget to write your state legislator a nice note thanking them for the
thought, and then ask that they extend the holiday to cover every day of the
year, and all products. After all, the Sales Tax only raised a projected $6.5
billion for the 2006-2008 budget cycle. How far back in Virginia budget
history do you have to go to find a state budget at least $6.5 billion less?
Not very far at all -- like, the most recent cycle before that, 2004-2006:

2006-2008: $74,908.3 http://dpb.state.va.us/budget/06-08/revenue.cfm
2004-2006: $61,404.2 http://dpb.state.va.us/budget/04-06/revenue.cfm

Put it this way: In 2005, were you pining away about the government being
tragically small?

I didn't think so.

3. A $50 Lesson, by Richard B. Boddie
================================================

A $50 Lesson
by Richard B. Boddie

I recently asked my friends' little girl what she wanted to be when she grows
up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal
Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what
would be the first thing you would do?'

She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.'

Her parents beamed with pride. "Wow....what a worthy goal."

I told her, "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You
can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and
I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the
homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a
new house."

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye
and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can
just pay him the $50?"

I said, "Welcome to the Libertarian Party."

And btw, her parents still aren't speaking to me, which is cool with me.

4. SCARE YOURSELF: Indoctrination (& Molestation) of Youngsters in Explorers
Camps
================================================

These kids get training in how to be fascists, and more:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/us/14explorers.html?_r=1&hp

But what else would one expect? Socialism is all about allowing thugs to
pilfer the lives (the record: 100 million killed last century) & property (the
record: way too much to count.) of others. It should surprise no one that it
also means that its adherents and practicioners would be prone to theiving away
the innocence of youth as well.

6. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Personal Liberty" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you an exploration of the Libertarian Party's platform
position # 1.0 - Personal Liberty; which reads:

--------
"Individuals should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept
responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make. No individual,
group, or government may initiate force against any other individual, group, or
government. Our support of an individual's right to make choices in life does
not mean that we necessarily approve or disapprove of those choices."
--------

In other words, as long as your choices injure no one else, no one has any
right to force you to stop making those choices. This is one of our most basic
principles, and it's why Libertarians favor an end to all Prohibitions against
so-called "victimless crimes". Further reading:

7. Libertarians arrested in Mississippi — probably for being libertarians
================================================

Illegal search, illegal arrest, fictitious charges -- the banana republic of
the USA at its best:

http://motorhomediaries.com/jones-county-sheriffs-department-falsely-arrests-mhd-crew/
http://www.thelibertypapers.org/2009/05/14/libertarians-arrested-in-mississippi-probably-for-being-libertarians/

Jones County Sheriff’s Department Falsely Arrests Motor Home Diaries Crew

The Motorhome Diaries is the story of three friends who took to the road in
April 2009 to search for freedom in America. Along the way the friends — Jason,
Pete and Tom — interact with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds
and viewpoints at college campuses, homes, businesses and organizations that
are united by one thing: increasing individual freedom and responsibility and
decreasing the scope of government.

Their story takes place in a 30 foot used motorhome affectionately dubbed
M.A.R.V. (Mobile Authority Response Vehicle). Driving from the urban jungles to
picturesque small towns and everywhere in-between, they connect with those who
reject government violence in favor of a voluntary society. Through the stories
of the individuals they interview they explore the historic shift in power from
individuals to the government and the growing movement of those who are
fighting back to reclaim their liberties.
