4. NATIONAL NEWS: Repealing Barr's DOMA
================================================

Some of our readers may be aware that the 2008 LP presidential candidate, Bob
Barr, back in 1996 authored the "Defense of Marriage Act" ("DOMA"). More
recently, he authored a call to repeal it:

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-barr5-2009jan05,0,1855836.story

Now, that repeal may be on the horizon. Today, (Tuesday 9/14/2009),
Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on
the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin
(D-WI), and Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) will introduce legislation to repeal
the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a law which discriminates against lawfully
married same-sex couples.

The legislators will be joined by married same-sex couples harmed by DOMA and
many of the country’s premier LGBT and civil rights advocates in a press
conference to announce the new bill, at 11:00am on Tuesday, September 15, 2009,
at the House Triangle, near the southern steps of the U.S. Capitol in
Washington, D.C.

Hopefully, a few LP members in the DC area will be in attendance at the
conference. Don't forget to bring a few fliers and signs!

5. NATIONAL NEWS: Rand Paul in DC
================================================

Rand Paul http://www.RandPaul2010.com , son of 1988 LP presidential candidate
Ron Paul, is running for United Sates Senate from Kentucky in 2010. While he
has only recently joined the race, polling
(http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=d9c984f5-5f5f-45c6-9025-a518f7341b19
 ) indicates he is edging closer to the establishment Republican candidate,
Trey Grayson (former Kentucky Lt. Governor). The Kentucky primary will be held
on May 18, 2010. For more information about the various candidates in the
race, see:

        http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=396350

While Paul is running as a Republican and not as a Libertarian, and is
therefore not endorsed by the Libertarian Party, some of our members are aware
of and are supporting him.

THIS WEEK, on Wednesday, September 16, Rand will be in Washington, DC to appear
on television, and will meet afterward with friends & supporters.
Contributions of $25, $50 or $100 are requested, and drinks and appetizers will
be served. Rand's father, Ron, hopes to be there if his congressional voting
schedule permits it.

If nothing else, attend and encourage him to stop wasting his time supporting
the big-government Republican Party, and join the LP instead.

Side note: In 1988, I hosted at my home national's traveling paid petitioners
who were crashing each state to get Ron Paul on the 1988 presidential ballot,
and Rand was among the extra help called in at the last minute when it looked
like we needed many more signatures. He was with us for the last couple of
weeks before the deadline in Virginia circulating the petition for his father.

6. RICHMOND NEWS: Michael Maszaros to Speak in Richmond
================================================

On Tuesday, October 6, the Patrick Henry Supper Club is presenting Michael
Maszaros, of Gay Pride Virginia, to talk about his group's mission and their
2010 Virginia General Assembly initiatives. Maszaros is a Designer for Calico
Corners and has a BA in Linguistics from the University of Virginia.

The meeting will take place at Pronto's Pizzeria, 5625 W Broad (near Einstein
Bros)., in Richmond, VA.

The group invites all Virginians to attend and enjoy great Italian food and
fellowship with your Libertarian neighbors.

In addition, the group will also discuss plans to sponsor activities with the
2010 Million Marijuana March, as well as planning for Legislative Action Days
and making some legislative requests of local Delegates and Senators.

7. NATIONAL NEWS: Russell Means on American Indian History
================================================

In 1987, American Indian Movement (A.I.M.) activist Russell Means sought the
Libertarian Party nomination for president. He lost a tight race against Ron
Paul for the nomination; however, he has remained on the minds of many
long-time Libertarians. He has gone on to many other projects and activities,
including appearing in many films, TV interviews, and news articles. He has
maintained some relationships with the Libertarian Party, having appeared at a
couple of LP state conventions since 2000.

Check out some of his most recent work with the award-winning PBS series
American Experience / We Shall Remain, a provocative multi-media project that
establishes Native history as an essential part of American history:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/weshallremain/

Russell's name became known nationwide in the late sixties and early seventies
due to his high-profile activities with A.I.M.

8. STATE NEWS: Indoctrinate-U Documentary Screenings
================================================

Liz Bowles said:

"Jackie and I went to the DC screening of this feature film documentary about
the lack of free conservative/libertarian speech on campuses across the
country. It was great. You may want to get [your local group] to run a
campaign to get 500 people to sign up for a screening... (click on Take Action
in the upper right corner):

http://www.indoctrinate-u.com/intro/ "

One reason this is timely is this article about a student who was suspended for
merely suggesting that allowing concealed-carry might prevent future tragedies.
 The administration considered that a "threat":

9. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Energy and Resources" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you an exploration of the Libertarian Party's platform
position # 2.3 Energy and Resources, which reads:

--------
While energy is needed to fuel a modern society, government should not be
subsidizing any particular form of energy. We oppose all government control of
energy pricing, allocation, and production.
--------

Period!

11. STATE NEWS: The "Government Behaving Badly" Files: This week's Criminal
Bureaucrats
================================================

"Exposing misbehaving government employees (but I repeat myself...) to the
harsh glare of ridicule since June 2009!" These are the True Stories from the
The "Government Behaving Badly" Files:

----------------------------------

GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE EXAMPLE #1: J.R. Tucker High School's former head football
coach, accused in Henrico County of sexual involvement with two students,
appeared briefly in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on
9/11/2009. Former teacher and coach William Macgregor "Mac" Leighton initially
was charged with five felonies stemming from charges that he solicited sexually
explicit pictures from two students and took indecent liberties while in a
custodial relationship with them.

Two of the five charges -- solicitation charges -- were withdrawn. He still
faces three indecent-liberties charges. Officials said the students were 15
and 17 at the time of the alleged incidents, which officials say occurred
between August last year and January this year. A trial date was set for Nov.
17 in Henrico Circuit Court. If convicted, Leighton faces one to five years in
prison on each of the three charges.

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/TUCK12_20090911-215204/292281/

Since the government made so much hay about sexual abuse among the clergy
(which was actually quite rare -- about 250 known cases since 1985), and
government courts allowed lawsuits that ultimately bankrupted churches for
employing the abusive (whether or not the church knew what was going on), any
bets that J.R. Tucker High School or the Henrico County Public School system
will will be auctioned off in a bankruptcy sale after a similar lawsuit? After
all, there have been *thousands* of government school workers convicted of some
sexual offense since 1985!

Nawwwwww.... "The law is for me, not for thee." Go eat some cake, plebe.

----------------------------------

Seen any government employees facing justice for crimes committed while
collecting a government paycheck? Let us know about it! Send announcements
and news to <[email protected]> or
<mailto:[email protected]?subject=criminal_bureaucrats> !

By the way, you won't be able to get any reports (other than judical records,
when the crime is prosecuted) from government about any of its employees who
have been fired or disciplined for breaking the law. Government considers
criminal 'crats to be protected by the rubric "confidential personnel matter".
They claim it isn't subject to FOIA.

11. THE LIGHTER SIDE: Political Quips
================================================

A major research institution (MRI) has recently announced the discovery of the
heaviest chemical element yet known to science. The new element has been
tentatively named Governmentium. Governmentium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant
neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an
atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called
morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called
peons.

Since governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected
as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount
of governmentium causes one reaction to take over four days to complete when it
would normally take less than a second. Governmentium has a normal half-life
of three years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in
which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
In fact, governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each
reorganization will cause some morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that
governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in
concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass.

----------------------------------

The woman applying for a job in a Florida lemon grove seemed to be far too
qualified for the job.  The foreman frowned and said, "I have to ask you this;
"Have you had any actual experience in picking lemons?" "Well, as a matter of
fact, I have." she replied. "I've been divorced three times and I voted for
Obama."
