BECOME A LIBERTARIAN CANDIDATE IN 2011: To get started, visit
http://Campaign.LPVA.com and let us know! And don't forget, I'm still looking
for the right local campaign to drop a few nickels on:

================================================
1. FEATURED LINK: Dave's Redistricting Page
================================================

Now here's a fascinating site. You can draw your own US House and state
legislative boundaries -- it always seemed to me to be rather insane for state
and federal-level districts to cut across county & city boundaries. I
recognize it has to happen sometimes, but...

http://gardow.com/davebradlee/default.html

The developer, Dave Bradlee, is a hard-left liberal, but nevertheless he's
written a really cool web app. The only thing that would make it better -- and
this may already be implemented somewhere that I haven't found it -- is a
"transparency" link that would reveal all of the underlying data so that his
work can be checked. That's the only part I don't trust: Leftists (I was one
before I became a Libertarian) have a long tradition of using trickery to get
their way (like the old saw sometimes attributed to one Joseph Vissarionovich
Stalin: "It's not the people who vote that count. It's the people who count the
votes." (see http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/dubiousquotes/a/stalin_quote.htm
).

As an example, the sequestration of underlying data so methods and conclusions
can't be recreated, is what confirmed my skepticism about anthropogenic climate
change.  See:

http://www.climategate.com/phil-jones-admits-withholding-scientific-data

Anyway, try your hand at fiddling around with district lines and see what you
come up with. Can't be any worse than what the two oligopoly parties inflict.

2. LPVA State Committee Meeting This Saturday, April 9
================================================

The State Central Committee of the LPVA will hold a quarterly meeting at 1:00
p.m., on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at:

West Main Restaurant
http://maps.google.com/?cid=634138268045893340s=9922421896652190731
333 West Main St., Charlottesville, VA 22903
(434) 293-2605

Lunch is at 12:00 noon, the meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. All LPVA members
are welcome to attend the meeting (and join us for lunch before the meeting).

LUNCH INVITATION: If you would like to have lunch with us, some of us typically
gather for lunch an hour before the meeting, and that is the plan this time as
well - arrive at 12:00 to join us. Again, you need not be an SCC member!

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS about the location, contact:

        James Curtis, (434) 409-4691, or email <[email protected]>; or
        Jim Lark 434-973-5958 or email <[email protected]>

SEE YOU THERE!

By the way, the LPVA Calendar page lists this meeting as well. Scroll down to
April 9:

3. Tobey sues over political detention
================================================

"A 21-year-old Virginia man who wrote an abbreviated version of the Fourth
Amendment on his body and stripped to his shorts at an airport security
screening area is demanding $250,000 in damages for being detained on a
disorderly conduct charge. ... Among other things, the federal lawsuit claims
wrongful detention and a breach of the First Amendment and Fourth Amendment."
(03/14/11)

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/03/4th-amendment-on-chest/

While I'm glad the charges against him were dismissed, I'm not sure how
penalizing the taxpayers will teach the bureaucrats a lesson.

I'd prefer that he offer the government a choice:

1) Government must pay money if they lose court case; or,

2) Offer a settlement where the government must fire all officials involved,
and prohibit them from ever again being employed by the federal government.

What do you think the chances would be that the government would choose door #2?

================================================
4.  The Leftist Double Standard
================================================

You know the big hue and cry over Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's
requests for Michael Mann's underlying data that was used to create Mann's
"hockey stick" fraud? Remember the cries about "academic freedom" and "witch
hunt"?

Over just a request for data?

So when Dr. James Enstrom blew the whistle on the California Air Resources
Board (CARB) for, among other things, failing to publicize that Hien Tran, the
lead author of the study that was used to justify the new regulations,
falsified his education credentials (he purchased his PhD from an online
diploma mill), Enstrom's employer -- UCLA -- not only didn't come to Enstrom's
defense, but told him that, after 34 years at the university, he was out of a
job:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5J32_ba-y0

So let's see if we have this straight: 1) An academic, Michael Mann produces
work that benefits the left by "making the case" for increased government
regulation. But he must be allowed "academic freedom" to hide his
taxpayer-financed data. Meanwhile: 2) Another academic James Enstrom finds out
that a bureaucrat producing work that benefits the left has fraudulent
credentials, and makes public the facts. But he must NOT be allowed "academic
freedom".

"Good enough for me, but not for thee."

Don't get me wrong... For the same reason I don't think Mann should have been
on the public payroll, I don't think Enstrom should be, either. In fact,
*nobody* should be on the government gravy train.

Enstrom's former employer, UCLA, should be sold off to the private sector --
for the same reason that UVA should be. The problem with public ownership is
that this sort of partisan political abuse is part of the package. You can't
root out the corruption, because corruption is an integral part of every
taxpayer-funded enterprise. "Academic freedom" in the public university sense
involves money taken from people against their will. And all too often, that
money is then used to pursue policies to which the taxpayer is fundamentally
opposed.
