1. VIRGINIA NEWS: Victory for Privacy Advocate
================================================

Roy Scherer sent this in:

Good news for fans of privacy -- and a defeat for oer'reaching government.

You may remember B.J. Ostergren, who has taken on the cause of preventing
Clerks of Court -- and other Government agents -- from posting the Social
Security Numbers of private citizens online. Her argument, with which I agree,
is that this makes identy fraud much easier.

After telling the legislators about the problem failed to work, she started
going online, getting the personally identifiable information (SSNs and more)
for various politicians, and posting them on her website. She hoped that doing
so would point out the severity of the problem, but instead the General
Assembly passed a law to make it illegal for anyone to do that. "We'll publish
whatever info about you that we wish to, but after we do, it will be illegal
for anyone to look up that information and republish it."

The courts threw out the law, and now they've broadened the decision.

From the website of the Richmond Times-Dispatch today:

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2011/apr/17/TDOBIT03-order-concludes-fight-over-social-securit-ar-977958/

>Order concludes fight over Social Security numbers
>
>A judge has signed an order broadening a Hanover County privacy
>advocate's right to post public records containing Social Security
>numbers on her website.
>
>District Judge Robert Payne's action concludes B.J. Ostergren's legal
>battle over a 2008 state law prohibiting anyone from making Social
>Security numbers available to the public.
>
>For years, Ostergren has posted government records containing Social
>Security numbers on her website to demonstrate that governments are
>failing to protect citizens' privacy. She won a lawsuit challenging
>the 2008 law, but the judge said she could post records containing the
>Social Security numbers only of public officials.
>
>A federal appeals court said the ruling was too limited and sent the
>case back to Payne.
>
>The consent order signed Thursday outlines other documents Ostergren can post.

2. The Libertarian Party: Tax Protesting Today!
================================================

It's Tax Day! Have you finished paying your annual tribute to the tax feeders?

For over thirty-five years before the Tea Party was even a glint in Sarah
Palin's eye, Libertarians have been out in front of US Post Offices, calling
for the repeal of the federal Income Tax, and the abolishment of the Internal
Revenue Service.

Is your local LP holding a Libertarian tax protest today? If so, let us know
how it went!

3. STATE NEWS: The "Government Behaving Badly" Files: This Issue's Criminal
Bureaucrats
================================================

Going Rogue: Not Palin, but the ATF.

As Usual:

"RICHMOND, VA (AP) - A special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has pleaded guilty to five charges, including
taking items under his control and converting them for personal use... The
government said 43-year-old Clifford Dean Posey of Chesapeake entered his plea
Monday in Richmond federal court to charges including wire fraud, embezzlement
and possessing or receiving stolen firearms."

From:
http://www.wtvr.com/news/wtvr-atf-agent-in-va-admits-5-felonies-20110411,0,5803972.story

The government man can be sentenced to five to 20 years on each count, and
possible fines up to $500,000.

Any bets on whether he gets any of the maximums?

Like the commenter said: "Coming from the same group that gave us the Waco
disaster and the current border "gunwalker" program, are you really supprised?
This agency should have been defunded 20 years ago for thier unchecked abuses."

Megadittos! Abolish the BATFE!

One wonders if the BATF considered issuing the usual cop-u-crat excuse that
there were "no policy violations, rules or procedures or laws were broken",
when they first found out Posey had sticky fingers.

4. A Statement on Private Manning's Detention
================================================

From:
http://balkin.blogspot.com/2011/03/statement-on-private-mannings-detention.html
:

Bruce Ackerman: Members of the academic legal community have begun circulating
a formal statement asking the Administration either publicly to justify, or
end, the humiliation and mistreatment of Private Bradley Manning, the suspected
whistleblower who is said to have leaked classified government documents to
Wikileaks.

Those of you connected with colleges here in Virginia might want to forward the
links to your friends who might have an interest in adding their names.

Right now, there are only a few from Va/DC):

Talbot Brewer, Philosophy, University of Virginia
Nancy Combs, William& Mary Law School
Rochelle Davis, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University
Marc Morjé Howard, Government, Georgetown University
