Fellow Libertarians,

I was hoping the remaining 13 precincts that have not reported yet in Virginia would have an additional 1,900,000 votes for Gary Johnson. But it's been a week, and we shouldn't wait too long for a post-election analysis.

It was a good year for liberty!!

We appreciate each of your votes for the Johnson/Gray ticket this year. 1,191,420 people voted for Gary Johnson nationwide, which translates to 1% of the popular vote.

The Libertarian Party of Virginia submitted nearly 16,400 signatures on petitions to meet a requirement of 10,000 signatures statewide, including 400 valid signatures in each of 11 congressional districts. Thanks to Jim Lark and Bill Redpath for running the petition drive. And thanks to all of you who contributed to make the petition drive a success with volunteer signatures and ballot access donations.

Gary Johnson VA co-chairs Juanita Billings and Laura Delhomme coordinated an impressive volunteer effort promoting Gary Johnson, including campaign tours through Virginia by Gary Johnson and Jim Gray. Thanks to them for all their hard work.

As a result of their work and yours, Gary Johnson received 30,570 votes in Virginia (0.82%). This handily beats Ed Clark’s total in 1980 (12,821 votes, 0.69%) – as well as Barr in 2008 (11,067 votes, 0.29%), Badnarik in 2004 (11,032 votes, 0.34%), Browne in 2000 (15,198 votes, 0.6%), and Browne in 1996 (9,174 votes, 0.38%).

We had three lower level races: Robert Kraus for Alexandria city council, Xave Draper for U.S. Congress district 3 (write-in campaign), and Justin Malkin for house of delegates district 45 (special election in September). They generated impressive earned media as newspapers covered their campaigns and they each developed a passionate Facebook fan base. Kraus received 7,900 votes (2.64%). Malkin received 289 votes (3.42%).

The minds opened to the ideas of liberty through our candidate media appearances are impossible to measure. We hope to build on their successes by running many more candidates in 2013 though. If you are interested in running for house of delegates or governor next year, please email Bill Redpath at [email protected] or go to the following website.

In addition to our record breaking presidential vote total, we libertarians can take pleasure in successful ballot initiatives throughout the country expanding liberty. Here in Virginia question 1 passed overwhelmingly (74.1% in favor), curbing eminent domain abuse by forbidding economic development takings of the kind the U.S. Supreme Court allowed in Kelo.

Ballot initiatives elsewhere around the country:
* Alabama, Missouri, Montana, and Wyoming rejected ObamaCare
* Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana (recreational)
* Massachusetts legalized medical marijuana
* Maine, Maryland, and Washington approved same-sex marriages
* Maryland expanded gambling
* New Hampshire rejected any new tax on personal income
* Oklahoma rejected affirmative action
* Sound Dakota rejected a sales tax increase
* Arizona rejected top-2, a third party killing plan

The Libertarian Party has retained party status in Alaska, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wyoming; and gained party status in DC, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. This will reduce ballot access expenses for our 2016 presidential candidate.

Going forward the Libertarian Party of Virginia will be focusing on a membership drive to restore our accounts to healthy levels. Our successful 2012 petition drive left the LPVA nearly bankrupt. One paid petitioner is still owed money. You can help by becoming a member of the Libertarian Party of Virginia. Please email LPVA secretary Marc Montoni at [email protected] if you are unsure of your membership status. A Virginia LP membership is $25 per year and a national LP membership is $25 per year. You can join or renew both at the following website (fill in 1 for the number of each membership type).

Thank you again everyone for voting for Gary Johnson and supporting the Libertarian Party with your time and money! You may have another chance to vote for Gary Johnson in 2016... he is still considering his future political plans.

Chuck Moulton
Chair, Libertarian Party of Virginia

P.S. Please join or renew your membership in the Libertarian Party of Virginia. Your support is critical to keep the Libertarian Party of Virginia strong for future elections.

P.P.S. Please consider running for house of delegates in 2013. Everyone in Virginia ought to have a Libertarian Party candidate on their ballot. The candidate who would best represent your views is probably you.
