Below is a brief account from a Socialist Labour Youth activist of his
arrest under the "anti-terrorist act".

Incidentally, there is to be a protest today (Friday 11th) by supporters of
the Turkish revolutionary prisoners in
London at 2pm outside the Home Office over the British police
confiscating copies of the magazine "Yasadigimiz Vatan" ("The Homeland We
Live In") under the Terrorism Act.

" ... they arrested me and held
me for 17
hours. they wanted 3 sets of details fingerprints, before they even charged
me with anything, to keep forever, and for no apparent reason! i told them
that the worst cases of miscarriage of justice in the UK have been where
special branch (anti-subversion political police) have deliberately beaten
false confessions and fabricated evidence against innocent people for
alleged 'terrorist' offences. i told them i would have to be a fool to give
my fingerprints with consent to special branch. they didn't understand, so
they got dubious authority to use reasonable force to take them. i resisted,
and between 1am and 5am various attempts were made to take them, with hard
metal handcuffs clamping my wrist and large male officers holding me and
forcing me into position. i still resisted and firmly told them that they
were carrying out a futile exercise, since it would be impossible for them
to take good usable prints if i didn't want to give them, unless i was
unconscious or not breathing. they tried again but i remained adamant that
they had no reason to take them and keep them forever. when they applied
pressure i shouted and screamed and almost couldn't stand the pain. they
gave up after various attempts over four hours, let me see a doctor, and put
me in a cell. i was told by the inspector (the person responsible for people
in custody, above the custody sergeant and jailer) the territorial support
group (TSG) would come in the morning to take my prints, that they had means
of taking prints from non-compliant prisoners, and that if my fingers or
even my wrists were broken it would be my own fault!! then she said that
they would keep me for as long as it took to get the prints!!

i told her that i was being held illegally, and that if anyone used more
than reasonable force in an attempt to get my fingerprints, she would be the
one i would hold responsible in later civil action against the police.

i slept between 5.30am and 8.30am. at 9 i asked to speak to the
superintendant, the duty inspector, and three different solicitors. they got
the ball rolling, and i was let out before 10am.

i'll give you a fuller report in a few days. i have an interview with a
reporter from the sunday observer tomorrow - maybe i'll get in the papers!
more importantly, i would to speak to as many meetings as possible to
explain to people what happened to me, and what to do if it happens to them.

they can use their unjust capitalist laws against us, but we will break
them. stand up for yourself, do not be intimidated. be confident and show
them that they are wrong. be bold. death to imperialism!
