AFP. 16 January 2002. NATO candidates to meet in March.

BUCHAREST -- Leaders of nine ex-communist nations hoping to join NATO
will meet in Bucharest in March as they prepare for a November summit
that could grant them membership.

The Romanian capital will host the meeting of government heads on March
25-26, the latest such high-level gathering of the NATO hopefuls ahead
of the November summit in Prague, said Prime Minister Adrian Nastase.

Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Romania,
Slovakia and Slovenia are all formal candidates to join NATO.

Three ex-communist countries -- the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary
-- joined in March 1999.

"The year 2002 will be marked by an acceleration in the reform of the
Romanian army," said Nastase, trumpeting his own country's plans.

NATO head George Robertson reiterated Wednesday in Brussels that
membership was not a "gift" and gave no inkling which candidates will
get the nod in Prague.

"I don't know the answer and nobody knows the answer," he said.

NATO foreign ministers are due to meet in the Icelandic capital
Reykjavik in May to discuss the alliance's enlargement.
