In total, more than 150 instructors are expected to arrive in the country, the minister told state television late Wednesday. The US military will train 1,500 Georgian troops as part of the war against terrorism, targetting al-Qaeda fighters who US officials suspect may be hiding in the Pankisi Gorge, which borders the breakaway Russian republic of Chechnya. A small group of US experts, mainly army engineers, are already in Georgia to examine the facilities where the training is to take place. The announcement of the invitation by Tbilisi earlier this month provoked nationalist fury in Russia, where generals and politicians are already angry about the presence of US military bases in ex-Soviet Central Asia.
