[Perisic is the non-elected 'Prime Minister' Zoran
Djindjic's second-in-command and presumably works for
the same people...abroad.]

The Times (London)

BELGRADE, March 15
Saturday March 16, 9:07 AM
Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic said today the
arrest of the Serbian deputy prime minister and the
detention of a US diplomat by military police in
Belgrade was a scandal.
"This is a first-class scandal with an international
impact," Djindjic told reporters after an emergency
session of his cabinet, following the arrest yesterday
of Momcilo Perisic and the 15-hour detention of a US
diplomat.
Djindjic said no top Yugoslav or Serbian officials had
been informed about Perisic's and the US diplomat's
detention by the Yugoslav army's security service.
Not even Yugoslav army chief of staff General Nebojsa
Pavkovic had been informed of the arrest, Djindjic
said.
Perisic and the diplomat were suspected of "spying and
revealing military secrets", a Belgrade military court
said today.
Djindjic, who had met briefly with Perisic during his
detention, said there were signs the arrests had been
"set up and politicised".
In Washington, the US State Department said it was
outraged by the treatment of the US diplomat, who was
"arbitrarily arrested, physically assaulted, and held
incommunicado for 15 hours by military officers."
