[NATO candidate member Romania has its own reasons for
inciting unrest and ethnic tension in Moldova, which
Romania officially persists in referring to by its
pre-1945 name of Bessarabia: It plans to swallow it
entire.
That the electorate of Moldova voted overwhelmingly in
the last parliamentary election for candidates of the
Communist Party (71 out of 101 seats) marked the
nation for Western interest. And subversion.
Here as throughout Eastern Europe from the Baltic Sea
to the Southern Balkans efforts are underway to redraw
the map to something closely approximating that of
1944, before the defeat of Nazi Germany and its

Romania, Moldova continue war of words
There have been more angry words between Romania and
Moldova, with the Romanian Foreign Ministry accusing
its neighbour of deliberately creating tension in the
region.
The strongly-worded statement also blamed Moldova's
communist government of being - as it put it -
chronically incapable of managing the social, economic
and political problems the country faces.
The statement follows Moldovan allegations of Romanian
involvement in a series of anti-government
demonstrations.
Earlier this week, the two countries ordered the
expulsion of military attaches from each other's
capitals.
Recent weeks have seen a sharp deterioration in
relations between Romania and Moldova.
