Special squad proposed to capture Bosnian Serb
fugitive
The chief prosecutor at the UN War Crimes Tribunal
says a special squad should be deployed to search for
the fugitive Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

However Carla del Ponte says her request for such a
force had been turned down.

Carla del Ponte said she was not surprised that two
recent attempts by the NATO force in
Bosnia-Herzegovina had failed to catch Radovan
Karadzic.

"You can't arrest a fugitive," she said, "if you move
into a village with 200 soldiers in uniform."

She had asked the countries that make up S-4 to form a
special plain clothes taskforce but they had declined.

Nor would the United Nations pay for such a unit.

Mrs del Ponte complained the Yugoslav President
Vojislav Kostunica who is also head of the army, was
not letting her see the documents that she needed in
the hunt for Mr Karadzic and the Bosnian-Serb's former
military commander, Ratko Mladic.
