Two Boys Die in Romania Sewer Fire Associated Press Thu Apr 11, 7:21 AM ET BUCHAREST, Romania - Two Romanian orphans perished and five people were injured after a fire broke out in a sewer they had huddled in to keep warm, police said Thursday. The fire broke out Wednesday in a sewer beneath Bucharest, probably sparked by a candle that occupants of the sewer had lit for warmth and light, police Capt. Cornel Diaconu by telephone. The candle apparently ignited piles of clothes and mattresses the children probably slept on, police said. Because it was an enclosed space, they were soon overwhelmed by the gases. Police noticed plumes of smoke rising from a manhole Wednesday afternoon and called the fire department. They said the victims were two boys ages 10 and 12 who had run away from an orphanage hundreds of miles away in the eastern city of Tulcea. They died from burns and from inhaling poisonous gases, Diaconu said. The injured people, four men and a woman, were taken to a hospital and treated for carbon monoxide inhalation and burns.
