Romania Sends Infantry to Afghanistan BUCHAREST, May 2, 2002 -- (dpa) Romania's parliament on Tuesday decided to send about 500 soldiers to Afghanistan as part of operation "Enduring Freedom", the Romanian national news agency Rompres reported in Bucharest. The battalion consists of 405 infantry, a special unit of 70 men for chemical-bacteriological-nuclear exercises as well as 10 liaison officers. A Romanian military police unit consisting of 25 men, three liaison officers, the airplane transporter Hercules C-130 plus staff have been in Kabul since the end of January 2002. Romania will pay mission costs of about 20 to 30 million U.S. dollars. The southeastern European country has been trying to present it itself as a de facto member of NATO recently in the hope of a favorable decision on their accession to the North Atlantic alliance at a NATO summit in Prague in November 2002.
