MOSCOW, MARCH 12th, 2003 /FROM RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT NIKOLAI MAKAROV/ - 20 million of Russian Muslims are against the US military action in Iraq, said chairman of the Russian muftis' Council Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin at a press conference on Wednesday. "Russian Muslims support the president's policy and the Foreign Ministry's efforts aimed at preventing war in Iraq," he pointed out. "There are opportunities of settling the crisis in a diplomatic way, especially now that Iraq is co-operating with UN inspectors," the mufti believes. Gainutdin recalled that "the Iraqi Embassy was receiving thousands of Russian citizens, both Muslims and non-Muslims, who are ready to do everything possible to protect the Iraqi people and to become a human shield". At the same time, Russian Muslims "do not interfere with this country's internal matters, and it is up to the Iraqi people to elect their leader", he emphasised. Chairman of the Religious Department of Muslims of Russia's Asian part Nafigulla Ashirov announced that a possible military action of the USA against Iraq was "aimed at destroying the established system of international relations and at gaining control over the country's natural resources". In the current situation, "the USA has a decent way out which is to listen to the opinion of the world community and the majority of the UN member states", Ashirov believes.
