ANKARA, March 12 (AFP) - Talks are underway on the possible use by US forces of Turkish airspace in case of war in Iraq, Anatolia news agency reported Wednesday quoting Turkey's ambassador to Washington Faruk Logoglu. Talks were still at a preliminary level and the United States have not formally asked for use of the airspace, the ambassador said, adding that it would be up to the Turkish parliament to rule on the matter. US warplanes, operating out of the southern Turkish base at Incirlik from where they patrol the airspace over northern Iraq, "cannot presently take part in an offensive operation against Iraq," Logoglu told reporters in Washington. Some 50 US and British warplanes are involved in the "Northern Watch" operation, which was put in place after the 1991 Gulf war to prevent Iraqi forces from attacking Kurds in northern Iraq. The Turkish parliament on March 1 rejected a call by the government to allow a massive US military deployment in the country in the run-up to a possible war in Iraq.
