Possible emergency situation
in Turkey

On 3 March 2003, the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response
Coordination Centre (EADRCC) received a request for
assistance from Turkey.

The request relates mainly to capabilities that might
be needed by medical teams, civil protection teams and
airport personnel to deal with the consequences of
possible chemical or biological attacks against the
civilian population.

It also includes items that might be needed to deal
with the consequences of population movements towards
Turkey.

Next steps

In accordance with its established procedures, the
EADRCC is forwarding this initial request to its
points of contact in the Euro-Atlantic Partnership
Council (EAPC) countries. Also, in a manner consistent
with its established mandate, the Centre is already
actively following up the Turkish request. Requests
covering additional items will be circulated shortly.

The Turkish Authorities have informed the EADRCC that
training and education in all aspects of NBC
protection, especially detection and decontamination,
are of utmost importance. Therefore, nations are
invited to provide such assistance to Turkey.
