AFP. 15 March 2003. Thousands rally for peace in Turkish port used by US
forces.

ANKARA -- Some 5,000 people demonstrated Saturday in the Turkish
Mediterranean port of Iskenderun, where the United States has been
unloading military equipment ahead of a possible invasion of Iraq, NTV
television reported.

"US go home," "No to war" read banners carried by the protestors.

Authorities imposed tight security in the city, deploying some 2,000
policemen, including riot units, along the route used by the marchers as
troops guarded the port complex where US military preparations
continued.

"We will not be American soldiers," shouted protestors on Saturday,
raising their fists in the air, as riot police holding plastic shields
kept a close eye on the coloful procession, television footage showed.

Young girls wearing the traditional Islamic headscarf joined the march
waving the red and white national flag, while several activists wore
white balaclavas.

"Let children smile. Go home!" said one banner held by a small boy.

Staunch anti-war public opinion led Turkish legislators to reject a
government motion calling for the deployment of 62,000 US soldiers in
the country in a vote on March 1.
