Moldovan PM to visit U.S. for financial aid deal

CHISINAU: Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat has left for the U.S. on
Tuesday to finalize a $262-million non-repayable financial aid deal.

Unlike his communist predecessors, the new Moldovan leadership, which came to
power following snap elections in late July, has openly supported closer ties
with the West. Filat has set Moldova's integration into the European Union and
accession to NATO as his top priorities.

The board of directors of the U.S. Government's Millennium Challenge
Corporation (MCC) approved the five-year economic development grant to Moldova
in November 2009. The money will be used primarily for improving the country's
dilapidated road network and irrigation systems.

During his visit to Russia a month ago, Moldovan Vice-Premier and Economy
Minister Valery Lazer said his country would also seek to develop economic
cooperation with Russia.

He asked the Russian authorities to provide Moldova with a $500 million loan
for investment programs requested by the country's former pro-Russian leader,
Vladimir Voronin.
