Ukraine training 12 detachments for participation in NATO Response Force

KYIV: Ukraine is training 12 detachments for their participation in the NATO
Response Force, which will fully meet the alliance's standards.

Chief of the General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed
Forces, Colonel-General Ivan Svyda told this to Ukrainian reporters in Brussels
on Wednesday. The Ukrainian chief of defense participated in a two-day meeting
of the NATO Military Committee held at the level of chiefs of defense.

“We selected 12 detachments that are undergoing training in line with NATO
standards and represent all types and branches of troops, including engineer
units, the marines, field engineers, chemical and biological defense troops and
others. Up to 500 Ukrainian servicemen will participate in the [alliance's
response] force,” he said.

Svyda said that Ukrainian detachments would be able to participate not only in
the NATO Response Force, but also in other operations led by the European Union
and the United Nations.

He said that Ukraine would participate in the 15th and 16th rotations of the
NATO Response Force in 2010 and 2011.
